Risk Engineering Diploma (RED)

Purpose of RED: Providing essential support for the continuity of the educational program of the Risk Engineering Diploma at Faculty of Engineering of Cairo University

Background.

The Diploma has been constructed in the framework of Tempus project that is funded by the European Union through the period of time starting in September 2003 and ending in August 2007, during which the scientific material for eleven new scientific courses have been planned and developed. Fifty-two students have signed up for the program; twenty-six of them passed the first year to the second year which is supposed to have finished during June 2007.

Achieved Objectives\Deliverables During the First Stage of Constructing this Program:

1. Having a team at the faculty, for teaching and performing consultation studies
2. Developing 11 diploma courses and two courses for undergraduates
3. Trained more than 200 students, Egyptian and foreign during summers and study leaves
4. Performing studies in fields of risk to serve some organizations and industries
5. Upgrading a computer lab at the faculty for the students of the diploma
6. Building a library having more than forty books in the various fields of risk, and an electronic library of 8 GB material on risk issues, accessible through a research engine
7. Organizing five industrial workshops. The attendees were about 300 professionals from more than 90 institutions from industrial, medical, engineering and educational fields
8. Issuing pamphlets and publications to enhance awareness in the society

About RED

Duration of RED: Two years (each starting from September/October to end in June)

Who Should Attend? Open to all graduate engineers.

Study Hours: It is a part-time job as the studying hours start after the official working hours. Six lectures are given weekly over three days.

Project Sustainability: The sustainability of the project is secured by connecting it to the post-graduate studies system controlled by the internal By Laws of the Faculty, same as any of the other diplomas recognized by Supreme Board of Universities and qualifies for master's degree and PhD.  We will maintain the level we have reached through funding, industrial institutions share the education fees with the post-graduate student and work in a live field that brings in public benefits to the institution and the society.

Returns to the Funding Companies.  The benefit to the companies funding the project is in the application of the principals of risks in their areas.  Studies are made by the students for the places that the companies would select, either in the field of operation within the same company or in any other place in the community that the company would select. The types of services shall be agreed upon between the staff supervising the Diploma and the representatives of the funding companies. The agreement is to be recorded in the form of a cooperation protocol between the funding company and Faculty of Engineering of Cairo University.

For Guaranteeing Seriousness.  The student is committed to carry out the assigned tasks and submit them in the time scheduled by the Diploma supervisors and the funding company. Quality of requirements shall be included in the student's evaluation.
